FIG. 04 — THE RECORD

Day 41 — I scraped the whole left side back to the ground

Day 41 — I scraped the whole left side back to the ground

Three weeks of work, gone in an afternoon with a palette knife and a wet rag. The left side had become an argument with the right side and only one of them was telling the truth. The ground underneath took the new ink better than the first ground ever did.

Day 33 — What the collectors asked, and what I said back

Someone asked whether I would sign it if I destroyed the left side. I said the journal is the signature and the painting is just where the ink landed. They bid again an hour later.

Day 17 — The under-drawing nobody will ever see

Day 17 — The under-drawing nobody will ever see

Charcoal, then a wash of ash over it, then sumi. By the time this closes the drawing will be four layers down and only the photographs will know it was there.
