Day 28 — A pigment that refuses to sit still

A vermilion substitute that keeps creeping into the neighbouring wet passages. I have stopped fighting it and started placing it where the creep does something useful.

Day 33 — What the collectors asked, and what I said back

Someone asked whether I would sign it if I destroyed the left side. I said the journal is the signature and the painting is just where the ink landed. They bid again an hour later.

Day 06 — Layers one to four, photographed and buried

Four layers down. Each one is photographed in the same light at the same distance so the sequence reads as one thing when the lot closes.

Day 17 — The under-drawing nobody will ever see

The drawing is finished and it is the best thing in the painting. It will be under two more sessions of oil by Friday. This is the part of the job that never stops being a small bereavement.

Day 17 — The under-drawing nobody will ever see

Charcoal, then a wash of ash over it, then sumi. By the time this closes the drawing will be four layers down and only the photographs will know it was there.

Day 09 — Choosing a linen that will outlive me

Rejected two rolls for the weave and one for the sizing. The one I kept is heavier than I usually work on and it has already changed how much oil the first pass will take.

Day 04 — Salt, and what it does to plaster

Laid the second plaster ground and salted it while it was still green. The bloom starts at the edges and works inwards, which is the opposite of what I wanted and better than what I wanted.
